Description
For two generations Freddy Krueger has scared the dickens out of movie goers. Now the most-dreamed-about name in horror history can be seen from beginning to end in this must-have collection.

Amazon.com essential video
In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the 13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, but six more sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion in Scream that the first Nightmare film was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment, Dream Warriors (starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film, The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film, New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of the Scream films and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare. --Mark Englehart

The previous review covered all of the logistical problems with this new collection: higher cost with less content. Now let's go over another disturbing problem: the cover. It features the wrong/new Freddy; Robert Englund stars in these eight films, yet the cover features Jackie Earle Haley's lame new rendition. This is just another cheesy gimmick intended to raise interest in the Nightmare reboot. New Line cinema should be ashamed for whoring themselves out to Platinum Dunes this way. As revealed in the "Nightmare Encyclopedia" from the original box set, New Line was a struggling, no-name company before the Nightmare franchise; Nightmare made them what they are today. Yet the makers of the reboot have repeatedly disrespected both Wes Craven and Robert Englund, and this cover shows that New Line's alliances lay with Platinum Dunes, and not with the creative forces that made them rich.

If you are a fan of the Nightmare series, do what was recommended above and buy the original box set, and Freddy vs. Jason by itself. You may pay a little more, but I believe the special features are more than worth the price. If you want all the films as cheaply as possible, then buy both Film Favorite four packs; you will save $12 compared to this set.

Lets start off by saying they are obviously like everyone else does when something is remade or made into a sequel re-releasing this box set to prepare for the remake of the awsome horror series from back in the 80's. Let me just say that the remake looks really good, except for the fact that they recasted Freddy? How can that ever happen? Anyways...

This box set in my mind is considered theft from your wallet or purse. They re-release them and with no special extras. You get what I mean though! Just the regular first released editions and also with no 3d glasses as in the first dvd box set released. Plus NO Freddy Encyclopedia with info. on Freddy? Who would want this box set for more money out of your wallet when you can hurry and buy the original dvd box release with a bunch of extras for dollars less? WARNING THOUGH: They will purposly make the first box set out of print just so you'll have to buy this ridiculous box set for more of a cost.

In my opinion...Your wasting your money!!!

I am looking at this when it comes out but unless this version contains the 91 minute version of Nightmare 5, I would not 2 buy this. I have the big collectors set & I would like it a smaller set but I am not wasting my money if the set is still 90 minutes in the dream child.

Extremely happy with the shipping time of delivery. Was estimated to arrive in a months time but got it a week later.
However the product itself was not so satisfying. Each of the 8 discs have marks and scratches on them. I have watched 3 of the discs and so far all is good. Also the inside of the dvd covers were all broken. Poor effort I must say.
Besides that, Nightmare on Elm Street is a great collection!
