About Petzl: Innovative Designs, Practical Approach Petzl, a family company, was born out of Fernand Petzl's passion for caving. One of the leading experts of his generation, Fernand spent his life experimenting with vertical progression techniques, and he invented equipment that radically changed the status quo. The Petzl company applied these underground tools and solutions to other vertical environments: first to the mountains--rock climbing and mountaineering--and then to the professional sector, with work and rescue at-height. The Petzl company quickly became known as the foremost innovator in the vertical world and has been associated with all major underground, alpine, and Himalayan adventures since the 1970s. Today, Petzl is the leader of hands-free lighting. Petzl revolutionized the industry starting with the Zoom, and then the Tikka--the first compact light. The company moved forward to introduce the state-of-the-art e+Lite and Ultra, and it continues to work with outdoor sports enthusiasts and professionals to create innovative, practical, high-quality lighting and climbing products. Insufficient Battery Life, 2010-07-20 For headlamps, Petlz is the best. By far. I had a 3-led petzl headlamp for NINE NINE (yes, 9!) years. It worked flawlessly with outrageous batterylife. The only reason why I had to get a new one was the casing had been held together with duct tape (very reasonable wear-and-tear) and was hassle changing batteries with duct-taped case.
This specific product, however, (a huge change instead of 2-4 LEDs it's one lamp) just sucked. Battery-life abysmal. The pull-down "wide-narrow" filter was useless (made no difference, especially with a dim, depleted battery light). Overall this headlamp had everything I didn't need (flashing craziness) and nothing I needed: good long-battery life.
I'll only use petzl headlamps (they still are the best despite this defunct product) but i'll be gettign an LED version as that seems to have better battery life.
Great LED headlamp, 2010-08-09 I love this Petzl E97 Headlamp. I primarily purchased it for use on my boat so I can rig fishing lines at night. It gives off ample light and allows me to have both hands free to rig my lines. It has two light intensity levels so I don't run-down the battery when I can get by with less light. It also has a red light option which is handy for seeing the display on my fish finder at night w/o putting out a lot of stray light. I now use it to read in bed at night, work under the hood of my car when it is in a garage, take walks at night in the woods w/o carring a flashlight in my hand. I love this product.
Great Headlamp, 2010-09-03 It has a bright, focused beam. It takes normal AAA batteries. It has an excellent strobe feature which draws very little power and really draws attention to itself. I use it for riding my bicycle at night, and my girlfriend has another one for the same use. It appears to be very water resistant, and has not malfunctioned after several uses in the rain. The backing seems sturdier than the old-style Tikka (mine broke after a few years of use and abuse) The only thing that I would change is to put a tacky silicone stripe on the elastic webbing so that it will slide even less on my helmet.
Best headlamp I've ever had, 2010-07-08 I rarely recommend outright buying a product, but for this one I do. This is by far the best headlamp I've ever had -- and trust me...I've had many. I was previously using a typical four-bulb LED light made by mountain hardware, but it needed four batteries, it was heavy, and not very bright. This headlamp, rated to 50 lumens full strenght, has never let me down. Most recently, I took this miniature sun all throughout the Pacific Northwest through snow, rain, and over rocks without a problem. Don't be fooled, though. This headlamp can do a lot more than just illuminate a camp ground. I has a very useful half-strength feature, so you don't blind your friends, and most useful for me a red light. I use this red light in the hour to two hours before I go to bed and any time after sunset. The advantage of the red light is that it is low in intensity, and thus will not blind you when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or say when you are star gazing. The red light is especially useful at night and in the evening because it will help you fall asleep faster than the average white light. In brief, the red light will not stimulate the pineal gland as white light will (white light will inhibit melatonin -- the drug that initiates sleep in the body).
Bottom line: I use this headlamp for absolutely everything, and I would buy it again and recommend it to a friend in a heartbeat. Absolutely worth the price as well.
GREAT LAMP FROM GREAT COMPANY!, 2010-08-17 This will be short and to the point.
You will love this headlamp.
- It is a high quality white l.e.d. bulb that produces 50 lumens. (about 100ft. of distance for light)
- As has a high quality red l.e.d. bulb producing light for reading maps and such at night. (Red is important for not losing your night vision so great thinking behind its intent)
- Has an indicator for low battery power so you know when your light has reached its half life. (this is good to know because no way wants to be left in the dark unexpectedly)
- Its water proof. (everyone at some point will have an accident with water, nice to know you are covered)
- Has 140 hour battery life. (uses 3 AAA batteries, that shows it is using quality led's)
- Very comfortable headband. (soft to the touch and very adjustable, it can be worn for hours with no problem)
- Adjustable light throw for looking forward or down. (why hold your neck down, just adjust the light position)
In the end with all products, you get what you pay for! I've bought other cheaper ones and always regret it. Just buy the good stuff once and save money not having to rebuy crappy stuff over and over.
Hope this helps those on the fence!
