Description
One of the most dynamic R&B duos of the '60s and early '70s, Ike and Tina Turner were a force to be reckoned with. Their live shows, nothing short of legendary, were high-octane performances of carefully orchestrated music from Ike turner combined with the raw sexual energy of vocalist Tina Turner. This spectacular CD/DVD set is from Holland in 1971, during the peak of Ike & Tina's tumultuous career.

I've listened to a lot of guitarists and I must say that I've NEVER seen or heard someone literally smack a note out of a guitar like Ike Turner (seriously no pun intended). It's as if Bruce Lee was playing the guitar. Tina is at her peak as she still is today. Her energy level is awsome and so is the bands. A must see for young entertainers. DaLawn.

The minute the 3 pink Ikettes prance onto the stage, you know you're in for a show. They can shake that thing. The Dutch audience is a doornail, but Tina acts like they're up and screaming. The DVD is cut to a TV-friendly 1 hour, but the CD includes 4 extra songs. Sound is good. Sympathy for the Ike? This is too much woman for any man.

"Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71" - even in this cut state - is probably the only full-length Ike & Tina concert available on DVD today, so for that alone, it's well-worth owning.

It's all the more essential, though, because it's truly a blast - this is the most energetic, soulful, joyous live concerts I think I've ever seen - and the songs themselves are just crazy, vibrant, brilliant performances by one of the most talented musical outfits of the 1970s.

Although the predominantly Dutch audience doesn't quite seem to 'get' it at the beginning - whenever should such a concert be a seated gig, anyway? - it doesn't take in the least from our appreciation of the atmosphere, and, even though there are one or two glaring flaws in the DVD presentation itself (several of the more noteworthy tracks such as "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and "Shake a Tail Feather" are missing, why is this??), it still doesn't stop this from being a powerful and wonderful celebration of music and dance.

Tina's on top of her game here, to watch her is to really understand the love a great performer has of his genre. From her entrance, right up to the end of "I Smell Trouble", there's not one part of her body that isn't in constant rhythm with the music, and her voice is amazing - raspy and raw, with a power behind it that lends so much more depth to the songs than many of their original performers lacked. The dance routines with the Ikettes, thanks to what's now a more amateur and simple style of camerawork, are powerful and energetic; you want to get up off the couch and dance with them! "Proud Mary" and the amazing "I Wanna Take You Higher" are examples, but even on the more downbeat tracks such as "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Come Together" (the Beatles, except better! Who knew?!) the masterful combinations of musical arrangement, vocal and choreography show us precisely why the Ike & Tina Turner revue was such a respected live act.

This is an excellent DVD, the restoration - although not perfect - has a great audio quality, and the visuals are just fine. The CD is a nice addition, though it would have been better, obviously, to include all the tracks on the DVD. Special Features are interesting, including a great short of the Ike & Tina performance at the 1971 'Soul to Soul' concert in Africa. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough; even with its shortcomings, it's still a treasure and a great recording of one of the best live acts of all time.

I love this DVD + CD edition. Although, their Holland audience - where the concert was filmed - was not the up-on-ya-feet!! kinda crowd. My favorite performance was in the Bonus Extras, where they performed 'Soul-to-Soul.' It reminded me of when I saw Ike and Tina live back in the '70s.
