Amazon.com essential recording The middle album of the trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs is Waits's best overall effort. The songs are first-rate, and there are a lot of them--19 in all, ranging from grim nightlife memoirs ("9th and Hennepin," "Singapore") to portraits of small-time hustlers ("Gun Street Girl," "Union Square") to bursts of street-corner philosophy ("Blind Love," "Time"). The album also contains the original version of "Downtown Train," which Rod Stewart turned into a smash hit. The image of "rain dogs"--animals who've lost their way home because the rain has washed away their scent--is an appropriate symbol for the entire cast of characters Waits has brought to life over the years, and this album has thus far proved to be his most enduring effort. --Daniel Durchholz

A Beggars Banquet, 2009-10-05 I remember buying this for myself on my 21st birthday. It didn't leave my cassette player for 3 weeks. That was 18 years ago.
I would still, and probably always will, rank this in the top 10 albums ever made.
It's hard to imagine another album as diverse and creative as this.
I've tried to introduce others to this masterpiece over the years, with only one real success that I can recall.
Most just return the disc (of course, I replaced the tape eventually) and look at me like I have 3 heads.
That this is a work of genius there can be no doubt, but it is certainly an acquired taste.
Great example of some older Tom Waits, 2010-03-19 This is a great example of Mr. Waits in his earlier years. Catchy and thoughtful, creepy and original, rampant with themes of the underground and his traditional gravel vocality. A must-have for fans. I heard it's part 2 in a three part storyline that includes Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, and Frank's Wild Years. I haven't listened to the third part yet, but this is a logical step up from swordfishtrombones. It also stands on its own as one of the most interesting albums I've ever listened to. I can't explain it anymore. Preview some of tracks like "Singapore" "Clap Hands" "Rain Dogs" "Blind Love" or "Anywhere I Lay My Head"
Quirky Fun, 2009-10-12 I learned of Tom Waits in the last year and thought "where have you been all my life?"
This album is great, quirky fun. The poetry is fabulous. Some of the songs carry me away somewhere while others have me bouncing around, giggling and smiling like a ten-year old girl. The only one Waits song that could make this album more perfect would be the addition of Step Right Up.
I must warn Waits newbies that this is musical-art, not anything like you'd find in the Top 40. My fiance (a top-40-phile; poor dear) HATES this album with a flaming passion. He looks like he wants to claw his own face off every time I put it on, he also hates The Red Elvises, it's sad really.
If you like things like experimental jazz and non-linear poetry I think you'll really adore this album. If you think Casey Kasem is god's gift to radio, you'll probably want to skip this one.
My favorite Waits, 2010-04-26 Of Swordfish Trombone, Mule Variations, this is my favorite - but the other two are outstanding as well...
    Strong if not spectacular, 2010-02-19 3 1/2
As diversely experimental as anything he's done, Wait's often classic tweaks upon various genres bends in momentum only to its predecessor.
