Catdog: Together Forever [VHS]

Catdog: Together Forever [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Jim Cummings , Tom Kenny , Carlos Alazraqui , Billy West , Maria Bamford
Director: Arnie Wong , Russ Mooney
Nickelodeon presents five episodes of CatDog, the unlikely and often repulsive tale of an animal who's (you guessed it) half cat, half dog. With two heads, one body, and no hind legs, this freak of nature encounters innumerable reasons to go on mad chases, read trashy books such as 1001 Uses for Hairballs, and argue with itself. Dog often yields to Cat's wishes. In Dog Gone, Cat convinces Dog to wear pants over his head and pose as Cat's hind quarters. CatDog's End goes one step further: Cat's ready for a real butt and leads Dog to the Better Bottoms clinic for a primeval separation. Hey, at least the kids will learn five new synonyms for the word "bottom." To its credit, the artistic crew exhibits tremendous creativity and use of color. But there must be a better way for 6-10 year olds to spend 45 minutes on any afternoon, regardless of the weather. --Liane Thomas

Six Pack [VHS]

Six Pack [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Kenny Rogers , Diane Lane , Erin Gray , Barry Corbin , Terry Kiser
Director: Daniel Petrie
Structured as a star vehicle for country singer turned actor Kenny Rogers, Six Pack is an amiable little film that aims low but showcases the pleasant and easygoing charm of its star. Rogers (The Gambler) plays a down on his luck race car driver saddled with a half dozen delinquents. As he tries to resurrect his fledgling career, he bonds with the little waifs and they form a sort of family, even as they are pursued by a corrupt sheriff who wants to send the kids to an orphanage and ruin Rogers' comeback. A blatant knockoff of films like Smokey and the Bandit, this family-oriented movie works best as a breezy comedy of errors, with the hapless racer contending with his unruly brood as they stay one step ahead of the law. --Robert Lane

Quick & The Dead (1987) [VHS]

Quick & The Dead (1987) [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Sam Elliott , Tom Conti , Kate Capshaw , Kenny Morrison , Matt Clark
Director: Robert Day
Not to be confused with Sam Raimi's flamboyantly stylized Western of the same name, this made-for-cable adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel is a lean, taut pioneer adventure set in the wilderness of the northern Midwest. Sam Elliott, sporting his trademark bushy mustache and eyebrows so thick they keep the rains off his face, stars as the mountain man and tracker Con Vallian. Tom Conti is Scottish storekeeper Duncan McKaskel bringing his wife Susanna (Kate Capshaw) and son from Pennsylvania to a homestead in Wyoming. When a scraggly gang (led by the wonderfully sleazy Matt Clark) marks the family as an easy target, Vallian makes himself their gruff guardian angel, partly out of attraction to Susanna ("You're a handsome woman," he likes to repeat). Pride, jealousy, and rivalry make Duncan and Vallian uneasy allies and Conti's musical lilt is a marvelous contrast to Elliot's gravely drawl. Capshaw is somewhat colorless but comes to life in a surprising explosion of angry violence. The beautiful landscape culminates in a stunning meadow where the homesteaders find their cabin, a location that must be the closest thing to heaven on Earth, but for the devils still on their trail. -...

SpongeBob SquarePants - Sea Stories [VHS]

SpongeBob SquarePants - Sea Stories [VHS]

Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Tom Kenny , Bill Fagerbakke , Rodger Bumpass , Clancy Brown , Dee Bradley Baker
Director: C.H. Greenblatt , Dan Povenmire , Sam Henderson
Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. SpongeBob SquarePants has clearly won a place in the hearts of American viewers. (Suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence, minor gross-out humor) --Charles Solomon

SpongeBob SquarePants - Deep Sea Sillies [VHS]

Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Tom Kenny , Bill Fagerbakke , Rodger Bumpass , Clancy Brown , Dee Bradley Baker
Director: C.H. Greenblatt , Dan Povenmire , Sam Henderson
This quintet of 11-minute episodes will not edify, but it will entertain, as the enduring popularity of this Nickelodeon offering attests. In an undersea version of "Green Eggs and Ham," the persistent boy sponge discovers Squidward has never tasted a krabby patty and hounds him until an addiction is born. The patties are featured again in the final episode when restaurant owner Krabs insists on trying to sell a spoiled sandwich. Since no one will bite, Krabs does, leading to a near-death experience. In between, the tenacious sponge and his seastar sidekick Patrick lure aging superheroes Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy (guest-voiced by Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway) out of retirement to vanquish a maniac. In the remaining two stories, the "little square dude" has fun with a gum wrapper and later nearly suffocates in the air-filled home of Sandy the squirrel. Best for ages 4-12, but nothing more objectionable than vomit humor for younger siblings. --Kimberly Heinrichs
