The Paper Chase [VHS]

The Paper Chase [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Timothy Bottoms , Lindsay Wagner , John Houseman , Graham Beckel , James Naughton
Director: James Bridges
Here's a movie that should convince anyone that law school is not for them--particularly Harvard Law School. Timothy Bottoms leads a group of would-be shysters through their first year at Harvard--which amounts to endless studying and backbiting as they try to memorize whole books at a sitting. As the grueling routine begins to get to them, each reacts to the stress in different way. Bottoms's character becomes consumed with winning the attention and approval of the school's crankiest teacher, the crusty Prof. Kingsfield, the role that won "newcomer" John Houseman an Oscar. Alternately funny and harrowing, it makes law school look like the academic equivalent of coal mining. --Marshall Fine

Danielle Steel's Jewels [VHS]

Danielle Steel's Jewels [VHS]

Staring: Annette O'Toole , Anthony Andrews , Jürgen Prochnow , Corinne Touzet , Sheila Gish
Director: Roger Young
A title in the Danielle Steel Television Film Series, this four-hour drama unfolds the story of a multi-generational family beginning in the 1930s, based upon Steel’s book of the same name. After her first marriage dissolves, Sarah Thompson (Annette O’Toole) tours Europe and meets the charming William, Duke of Whitfield (Anthony Andrews) who captivates her and persuades her to marry him. They settle in a French chateau until World War II interrupts their marital bliss and William must join his regiment in war, leaving Sarah at home with a child. She contends with losses and loneliness until he returns home. Then, with a touch of serendipity, the couple begins a small jewelry business, which eventually expands into a thriving family endeavor. As her children grow into adults, Sarah’s intentional love toward them is her truest nobility. Though the second of this two-part series degrades, in part, from drama to soap opera, the overall effort receives merit for its notable acting and beautiful cinematography. Some domestic violence and sexuality. (Ages 16 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Titanic (1953) [VHS]

Titanic (1953) [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Clifton Webb , Barbara Stanwyck , Robert Wagner , Audrey Dalton , Thelma Ritter
Director: Jean Negulesco
Although it was never known for strict authenticity, the elegant 1953 production of Titanic holds just as much fascination as A Night to Remember and James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster. Its original screenplay deservedly won an Oscar® for its brilliant, dramatically involving creation of fictional characters--primarily a strained couple on the verge of divorce (Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck)--whose lives are forever altered on that fateful morning of April 15, 1912. Director Jean Negulesco focuses on this human drama, lending a personal touch to the luxury liner's fatal collision with an iceberg; if the scale-model disaster (complete with motorized miniature lifeboat rowers) looks quaint by modern special-effects standards, it still captures the emotional impact of Titanic's ultimate fate. While Titanic's sinking is inaccurately depicted (here the ship is damaged on the port side, and sinks in one piece), the Webb/Stanwyck relationship is handled with sophistication, style, and well-earned redemption. As would happen with Cameron's Titanic 44 years later, fiction proved a perfect vehicle for tragic factual history. --Jeff Shannon

The Mountain [VHS]

The Mountain [VHS]

Rated: NR (Not Rated)
Staring: Spencer Tracy , Robert Wagner , Claire Trevor , William Demarest , Barbara Darrow
Director: Edward Dmytryk
In these days when the natural wonders of the world can be so easily synthesized on film by computers, it's a little tough to look upon studio sets of mountain exteriors as anything but unsatisfactory. But that's the situation with Edward Dmytryk's 1956 drama The Mountain, starring Spencer Tracy as a retired mountain guide who accompanies his brash young brother (Robert Wagner) on the ascent of a rugged slope to the site of a plane crash. Essentially, Tracy goes along to keep his venal sibling from getting killed, but once at the crash location his attention shifts toward helping a Hindu survivor (Anna Kashfi) reach safety. Not so the agenda of Wagner's character, whose real mission is looting valuables from the dead. The strains and dangers of the climb up and down perfectly mirror the tense dynamics between the two men, and on this score Dmytryk (The Caine Mutiny) does a splendid job. Less compelling, however, is the action, which requires far too much suspension of disbelief even for the late '50s. --Tom Keogh
