Rated: Unrated
Staring: Indira Varma , Sarita Choudhury , Ramon Tikaram , Naveen Andrews , Rekha
Director: Mira Nair
If you're looking for a deep, intelligently romantic movie with complex characters and a richly rewarding plot, don't bother with Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. On the other hand, if you're feeling sexy and in the mood for a lush, seductive, and visually stunning film set in 16th-century India, this one will please you like the best foreplay you've ever experienced. Or it will relax you like a full treatment at a pampering spa--either way, you're gonna feel pretty fantastic. Okay, okay... maybe we're getting a little carried away, but there's no denying that director Mira Nair (best known for her acclaimed film Salaam Bombay!) has crafted a sumptuous film for the eyes if not the head. Its melodramatic plot is involving enough to elevate the movie high above soft-core adult fare, so you won't feel guilty after watching it.

Kama Sutra is the story of a young woman named Maya (the stunning Indira Varma) who has always been lower on the social scale than her well-born friend Tara (Sarita Choudhury), and has always lived in Tara's shadow, wearing her used clothes and being made to feel inferior. When Tara is betrothed to the handsome King Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews...

My Own Country [VHS]

My Own Country [VHS]

Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Naveen Andrews , Ranjit Chowdhry , Sharon Dyer , Craig Eldridge , David Fox
In this moving true story, an East Indian doctor takes over a hospital department of infectious diseases in rural Tennessee, just as the AIDS epidemic is sweeping the nation. Naveen Andrews (The English Patient) plays Dr. Abraham Verghese, a young family man who immerses himself in the lives of his patients. First, he must educate the residents of Johnson City, Tennessee, about AIDS. "What was common in New York and San Francisco was unheard of here," says Verghese. Before long, however, the compassionate Dr. Verghese is overwhelmed with a caseload of 82 people suffering with AIDS from hundreds of miles around. The acting in the film is first rate, with Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei playing a simple southern girl whose beloved brother (played by her real-life sibling, Adam Tomei) is dying of the disease. Glenne Headly's portrayal of a dirt-poor housewife who catches AIDS from her philandering husband is also especially strong. Mira Nair, director of such films as Mississippi Masala, brings her intimate knowledge of Indian traditions to the film, lending invaluable authenticity to its theme of clashing cultures. An engrossing, heart-rending picture, My Own Co...

The Perez Family [VHS]

The Perez Family [VHS]

Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Marisa Tomei , Anjelica Huston , Alfred Molina , Chazz Palminteri , Trini Alvarado
Director: Mira Nair
Marisa Tomei releases her inner spitfire in The Perez Family. Dottie Perez (Tomei) comes to the U.S. from Cuba, along with a mixed lot of criminals, lunatics, and political prisoners--including Juan Perez (Alfred Molina), who hopes to be reunited with his wife after 20 years. To work around the bureaucratic politics of the refugee camps, Dottie persuades Juan to pretend that they're married, and drafts a few other Perezes to create a family. Meanwhile, Juan's wife Carmella believes that Juan never arrived and is finally letting go of his memory, helped by the attentions of a Miami police detective (Chazz Palmintieri). Tomei's sexy passion sometimes spills over into silliness and the story unfolds erratically, but the examination of how love grows and how love fades is sincere and affecting. The actors are charismatic, the music's fantastic, and Tomei wears many skimpy outfits. Directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding). --Bret Fetzer

I'm Not Rappaport [VHS]

Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Walter Matthau , Ossie Davis , Amy Irving , Craig T. Nelson , Boyd Gaines
Director: Herb Gardner
Walter Matthau and Ossie Davis are the best reasons to see this Herb Gardner (A Thousand Clowns) comedy-drama about bickering, octogenarian companions who meet daily in Manhattan's Central Park. Spinning fictions, pushed around by yuppie scum, brutalized by extortionists and drug dealers, the two men go right on with their benchwarming rituals despite the entreaties of family and logic. Gardner deserves a passing grade for his directing effort, though he sabotages a couple of ripe opportunities to let his two great lead actors intensify the emotion of the piece on their own terms. With Martha Plimpton, Amy Irving, and Craig T. Nelson. --Tom Keogh

Autumn in New York [VHS]

Autumn in New York [VHS]

Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Richard Gere , Winona Ryder , Anthony LaPaglia , Elaine Stritch , Vera Farmiga
Director: Joan Chen
Autumn in New York is a by-the-numbers love story, right down to its opening shot of, yes, autumn in New York. Richard Gere stars as restaurateur/lady's man Will, while Winona Ryder plays the airy-fairy, oh-too-delicate-for-this-world Charlotte. Will is 48, Charlotte is 22, and it just keeps getting creepier: Will actually used to hang out with Charlotte's mom. She plays artily with beads and sparkly things, he notices how elfin and different she is (inspiring such stomach-churning dialogue as "I find you completely unprecedented and therefore utterly unpredictable"), and soon they're in love. Ah, but it's doomed: she has a tumor in her heart (just in case you missed the significance, Charlotte says "I'm sick in my heart!"). Does Charlotte have enough time left to teach Will to truly love? While Gere does a stoic job, Ryder spends a lot of time being darling and winsome, aided by the fact that Charlotte has managed to catch one of those special movie diseases where you never look bad or get tubes stuck up your nose. Director Joan Chen doesn't have much of a script to work with, but at least she knows how to pick a cinematographer; the whole movie is shot...
