He may be a tiny bottom dweller, but Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants sports some mighty big dreams in The Sponge Who Could Fly. Part one of this four-episode volume's title show follows human host Patchy the Pirate in his desperate, rather bizarre search for the "lost" SpongeBob episode. Deep in the suburbs of L.A., Patchy finally uncovers his treasure: a glorious, animated musical about a wistful blue-eyed sponge who dreams of flying with jellyfish. Ironically, SpongeBob's own helpful nature nearly drowns his lofty pursuits, especially when inflatable pants become more of a burden than a blessing. But friendship and happy endings prevail. In subsequent episodes (sans Patchy), SpongeBob boldly endures a nasty case of the Suds, relentless brainwashing attempts by Plankton, and his 38th attempt at passing Mrs. Puff's boat- navigation test. It's 60 minutes of goofy underwater entertainment, kooky music, and exceptional animation for "kids" ages 7 and older. --Liane Thomas

Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. SpongeBob SquarePants has clearly won a place in the hearts of American viewers. (Suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence, minor gross-out humor) --Charles Solomon

The Powerpuff Girls blends strong female figures with striking graphic design to create an action-packed cartoon for 5- to 9-year-olds (although parents should monitor the violent content here). Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup are three kindergartners with superhero powers that help the mayor keep Townsville safe. There are five separate episodes in this hour-long tape. In "Monkey See, Doggie Do," the villainous Mr. Mojo Jojo is systematically turning townspeople into dogs. It's up to the Powerpuff Girls to break the spell--but can they succeed even after Mojo turns them into Powerpups? "Mommy Fearest" paints a frightening picture of Professor Utonium's new date--good thing the Powerpuffs see through her facade! In "Telephonies," crank calls from the Gangrene Gang have the Powerpuff Girls roughing up Mojo, Fuzzy, and Dim when they haven't done anything wrong. You'll never guess who saves the day! If you've ever wondered what the colorful Townsville would be like in black and white, check out "Mime for a Change." When Rainbow the clown gets bleached and becomes the evil Mr. Mime, it's up to the Powerpuff Girls to put the color and sound back into Townsvil...

Split pants, bad breath, and time travel are just part of the nonsense the animated sponge and his undersea buddies are up to in this installment of the popular Nickelodeon series. The cheerfully inept SpongeBob splits his pants while hoisting marshmallows in a weightlifting competition, to the amusement of the crowd. So if it's funny once, it must be funny five times, right? Next, Squidward gets trapped in the Krusty Krab freezer and time travels to a future of Spongetrons and back to prehistoric SpongeBob and Patrick--not a pretty sight. There's also a cure for Sandy the squirrel's homesickness for Texas, underwater ghost stories when SpongeBob and Squidward work the night shift, and the sponge's aforementioned sea onion breath in this five-episode compilation. Don't look for any double-entendres to amuse the parents here; this 57 minutes of goofing is strictly for kids, ages 4 to 10. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Halloween boasts a full hour of deep-sea spooks featuring Nickelodeon's jolly sponge with the cubical trousers. In "Scaredy Pants" easy-to-scare SpongeBob attempts to come up with the scariest costume ever--and exceeds beyond his wildest dreams. "Imitation Krabs" concerns Plankton's evil robotic plan to trick SpongeBob into revealing Mr. Krab's secret krabby patty recipe. "Frankendoodle," a spoof on Frankenstein, has SpongeBob drawing a self-portrait with a magical pencil he found. It proceeds to come to life, wreaking havoc all over Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob turns into a "snailcat" in "I Was a Teenage Gary" when he's accidentally injected with pet Gary's medicine. And in "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost," SpongeBob and pal, Patrick the starfish, mistake his grumpy talcum powder-covered neighbor for a grown-up Casper. The educational value may be minimal, but the humor quotient is high in these five installments of the popular series. For ages 6 and up. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
