Shawshank Redemption [VHS]

Shawshank Redemption [VHS]

Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Tim Robbins , Morgan Freeman , Bob Gunton , William Sadler , Clancy Brown
Director: Frank Darabont
When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who's sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize there's reason to believe the banker's crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andy's calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith,...

SpongeBob SquarePants - Sea Stories [VHS]

SpongeBob SquarePants - Sea Stories [VHS]

Rated: G (General Audience)
Staring: Tom Kenny , Bill Fagerbakke , Rodger Bumpass , Clancy Brown , Dee Bradley Baker
Director: C.H. Greenblatt , Dan Povenmire , Sam Henderson
Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has become so popular, it must be considered a phenomenon. The series has a pleasant, predictable, and slightly offbeat humor, and these mini-adventures give viewers what they expect. SpongeBob has to deal with a ghostly pirate, his own insecurities when his skill as a preparer of krabby patties is challenged, and the dangerous pleasures of fisherman's hooks. The voice acting is often amateurish and imitative. Patrick suggests a Homer Simpson-wannabe, while Bubble Bass sounds like the Comic Book Guy. The humor can become gross. In episode No. 2, SpongeBob absorbs a bathtub full of water, then vomits it at Gary, the snail who acts as his dog. But it seems pointless to grumble about these weaknesses. SpongeBob SquarePants has clearly won a place in the hearts of American viewers. (Suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence, minor gross-out humor) --Charles Solomon

Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, The [VHS]

Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, The [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Peter Weller , John Lithgow , Ellen Barkin , Jeff Goldblum , Christopher Lloyd
Director: W.D. Richter
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension is one of the most agreeably insane movies ever made. Peter Weller stars as Buckaroo, an acclaimed neurosurgeon, particle physicist, and, of course, rock star. He travels with the Hong Kong Cavaliers, a band of hard-rocking scientists who are also really good dressers. Buckaroo's interdimensional experiments with his Operation Overthruster throw him (and the Earth) straight into the middle of an alien war, and before you know it, he's got just a few hours to save the world. Confused? Hang on, we're only 10 minutes into the movie. Buckaroo Banzai hurls you right into the middle of its comic-book universe and keeps going at a breakneck pace. It's chock-full of overlapping jokes (even as we're trying to make sense of Dr. Lizardo's hospital room, a voice calmly announces that "lithium is no longer available on credit" over the PA system), hilarious throwaway dialogue ("You're like Jerry Lewis: you give me hope to carry on."), and weirdness just for the sheer joy of it ("Why is there a watermelon there?" "I'll tell you later."). You'll want to watch it at least twice--there's just no way to catch everything the fi...

Flubber [VHS]

Flubber [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Robin Williams , Marcia Gay Harden , Christopher McDonald , Raymond J. Barry , Clancy Brown
Director: Les Mayfield
Disney couldn't resist the temptation to remake 1961's popular comedy The Absent Minded Professor, so they cast Robin Williams as Professor Philip Brainard (a role vaguely related to the character originated by Fred MacMurray), and the result is a comedy that, frankly, doesn't fully deserve its modest success. It's admittedly clever to a point, and certainly the digitally "flubberized" special effects provide the kind of movie magic that's entertaining for kids and parents alike. The professor can't even remember his own wedding day (much to the chagrin of his fiancée, played by Marcia Gay Harden), and now his academic rival (Christopher McDonald) is trying to steal his latest and purely accidental invention--flying rubber, or ... flubber. The green goo magnifies energy and can be used as an amazing source of power, but in the hands of screenwriter John Hughes it becomes just another excuse to recycle a lot of Home Alone-style slapstick humor involving a pair of bumbling would-be flubber thieves. There's also a floating robot named Weebo and some catchy music by Danny Elfman to accompany dancing globs of flubber, but the story's too thin to add up to anything special. Lightweight ...
