Madeline [VHS]

Madeline [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Frances McDormand , Nigel Hawthorne , Hatty Jones , Ben Daniels , Arturo Venegas
Director: Daisy von Scherler Mayer
The schoolgirl adventures of Madeline, a flame-haired orphan, are lovingly adapted from Ludwig Bemelmans's classic children's books. His sly and witty writing is transferred to this first-rate film, one that should not be thought of merely as childhood entertainment. Spunky Madeline is most adept at finding trouble. She is also a quick-witted and likable child who can solve almost any problem. Her latest scheme is to keep her school, which is also her home, from being sold by its owner, the recently widowed Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne). Unlike most youthful movie fare, this adventure boasts high production values that wisely include colorful Parisian locations. Hatty Jones is all spunky self-sufficiency and sweet innocence in the title role, and Frances McDormand is quite humorous as the stern school-mistress, Miss Clavel. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Notting Hill [VHS]

Notting Hill [VHS]

Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Julia Roberts , Hugh Grant , Richard McCabe , Rhys Ifans , James Dreyfus
Director: Roger Michell
They don't really make many romantic comedies like Notting Hill anymore--blissfully romantic, sincerely sweet, and not grounded in any reality whatsoever. Pure fairy tale, and with a huge debt to Roman Holiday, Notting Hill ponders what would happen if a beautiful, world-famous person were to suddenly drop into your life unannounced and promptly fall in love with you. That's the crux of the situation for William Thacker (Hugh Grant), who owns a travel bookshop in London's fashionable Notting Hill district. Hopelessly ordinary (well, as ordinary as you can be when you're Hugh Grant), William is going about his life when renowned movie star Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) walks into his bookstore and into his heart. After another contrived meet-cute involving spilled orange juice, William and Anna share a spontaneous kiss (big suspension of disbelief required here), and soon both are smitten. The question is, of course, can William and Anna reconcile his decidedly commonplace bookseller existence and her lifestyle as a jet-setting, paparazzi-stalked celebrity? (Take a wild guess at the answer.) Smartly scripted by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) an...

Whistle Blower [VHS]

Whistle Blower [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Michael Caine , James Fox , Nigel Havers , John Gielgud , Felicity Dean
Director: Simon Langton
In this 1987 espionage thriller, Michael Caine is Frank Jones, a businessman and patriotic war veteran whose son Bob (Nigel Havers) is a Russian linguist who works at the intelligence-gathering Government Communications Headquarters. A few days after Bob expresses doubts to his father about aspects of his work, police report to Frank that his son has died in a fall, and a verdict of accidental death is recorded. However, in the midst of his grief, Frank is puzzled by the circumstances of his son's death and decides to conduct his own investigation. In so doing he finds himself pitted against an utterly unscrupulous Secret Service prepared to stop at nothing, including murder, to cover up their operations. Set during a time when concerns about GCHQ were at their height and the Cold War had yet to thaw, many of the film's concerns seem, years subsequently, to be thankfully dated. Moreover, it's hard to believe that the bumbling British Secret Service would actually be capable of organizing a convivial soiree in a brewery, let alone orchestrating the sort of skullduggery they perpetrate here. Still, with a cast that features all the usual British suspects (Sir John Gielgud, James Fox,...

The Golden Bowl [VHS]

The Golden Bowl [VHS]

Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Kate Beckinsale , James Fox , Anjelica Huston , Nick Nolte , Jeremy Northam
Director: James Ivory
Based on the Henry James novel, The Golden Bowl earns a regal place in the long line of lavish Ismail Merchant and James Ivory productions casting spectacular mise en scène in the lead role. The crumbling Italian palazzo that opens the film and the magnificent English country houses that encase the unfolding drama play, as always, an intrinsic part in the ruptured psyche of whatever gentry Merchant and Ivory have elected to pursue. In this case, divided attention is paid to erstwhile glories and turn-of-the-century ambitions. Impoverished Italian prince Amerigo (Jeremy Northam) is to marry heiress Maggie Verver (Kate Beckinsale), school friend of Charlotte (Uma Thurman), who in turn weds American industrialist and art collector Adam Verver (Nick Nolte), Maggie's father. Amerigo and Charlotte, having previously been lovers, are helpless to resist an adulterous affair. A study of life's covetous designs failing to imitate the perceived perfections of art, The Golden Bowl is likewise flawed but alluring. --Fionn Meade

Truly Madly Deeply [VHS]

Truly Madly Deeply [VHS]

Rated: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested)
Staring: Juliet Stevenson , Jenny Howe , Carolyn Choa , Bill Paterson , Christopher Rozycki
Director: Anthony Minghella
Truly Madly Deeply is an intelligent, moving, and deeply funny story about love and death. Nina (Juliet Stevenson), a scatterbrained professional translator, has lost the love of her life, Jamie (Die Hard's Alan Rickman). As her life (and her flat) slowly falls to pieces, she's inundated by an endless stream of repair men and eligible suitors. But rather than go on with life, Nina dwells on her dead love, slumped at her piano, endlessly playing half of a Bach duet. Then, in a truly magical sequence, his cello suddenly joins her melody ... and Jamie's back from the dead.

At first it's bliss. (Think of the superficially similar blockbuster Ghost--only with real people instead of pretty faces Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.) But Nina gradually realizes it's a thoroughly real Jamie who's back, complete with every annoying, argumentative fault she'd conveniently forgotten. (He might be dead, he explains, but he still attends political meetings.) Moreover, he has to hide whenever any of the living are around. And he's constantly ice-cold. And he invites his dead pals to her place at all hours. What's a living woman to do?
