Ken Burns's Jazz: The Story of American Music

Ken Burns's Jazz: The Story of American Music

Artist: Various Artists
This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High."

The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he...

Vince Guaraldi - Greatest Hits

Vince Guaraldi - Greatest Hits

Artist: Vince Guaraldi
He's best known, and deservedly so, for the jazzy music he wrote for Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts" characters, but San Francisco-based Vince Guaraldi was also a highly regarded trio and ensemble pianist whose laid-back grooves are still a treat to hear. Greatest Hits samples his various stages, from big hits "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" and "Samba de Orpheus" to his work with Latin guitarist Bola Sete ("Days of Wine and Roses") to, yes, his beloved "Peanuts" compositions ("Good Grief," "Linus and Lucy," "Christmastime Is Here"). --David Horiuchi

Now based in New York, Eliane Elias was born in Sao Paolo and grew up as a child prodigy on the piano during the 60's when Bossa Nova was conquering the world. Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Greatest Hits

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Greatest Hits

Artist: Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
A bridge between bossa nova and 1960s pop, Sergio Mendes' music was easy listening, vaguely psychedelic pop, light jazz, and bossa nova all rolled into one. Mendes and Brasil '66 (which featured Mendes on keyboards and a revolving cast of two female vocalists, bass, guitar, drums and percussion) had a number of hits from the mid-'60s to the early-1970s that are included here. Getting his professional start playing and arranging for Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Mendes typically filled out his proper albums with updated versions of popular songs written by the Brazilian masters as well as some of his own tunes his tunes "Look Around" and "So Many Stars" are included. But this collection really surveys his interpretations of pop tunes of the day, some of which were never hits for Mendes. The small combo's light touch and rich vocal harmonies make for pleasant if kitschy covers of hits like the Beatles' "Fool On The Hill" and "Day Tripper," Burt Bacharach's "The Look Of Love," and others. --Tad Hendrickson

Nina de Fuego

Nina de Fuego

Artist: Buika
Buika unveils herself on the cover and bears all on her third album,
Niña de Fuego. Buika does away with the costumes that usually
decorate album covers, stripping away all but her feelings.
When she moved to Madrid and recorded her first album, she showed
the never-ending possibility of her skills as a singer. With her second
album,Mi Niña Lola, produced by Javier Limón, she got the
credibility, the recognition, the awards, the performances, and the
exciting reviews that left people breathless.
Her career cannot be summarized in a sentence but when she opens her
mouth you realize there is no singer like her.
Buika now arrives with her third album, Niña de Fuego (Girl
of Fire) again teaming up with producer Javier Limón. On this album,
Buika returns to the Spanish copla, performs for the first time several
ranchera songs, and also some new songs composed by herself and Javier
Limón. The album is full of songs about love and longing affection.
Buika sings of her personal experience in the lyrics that she and Javier
Limón wrote and composed.

Getz/Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto

Artist: Stan Getz , Joao Gilberto , Astrud Gilberto
Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Ge...

Live At The Village Vanguard

Live At The Village Vanguard

Artist: Bebo Valdes & Javier Colina
Bebo Valdés is the last remaining giant from the Golden Age of Cuban music. In 1952 he recorded for American producer Norman Granz the first Cuban Jazz jam session in Havana. His big band, Sabor de Cuba, was one of the island's finest. Additionally, he was pianist for the Tropicana orchestra, and music consultant for the fabled cabaret. He performed on Nat King Cole's best-selling album Cole Español, and taught the American vocalist how to sing in Spanish. Mr. Valdés was the Quincy Jones of his day, writing charts for the island's top vocalists, including Olga Guillot, Rolando Laserie, Celeste Mendoza, Fernando Alvarez, Xiomara Alfaro, Celia Cruz, Pío Leyva and Beny Moré. Along with René Hernández, Chico O'Farrill and Pérez Prado, Mr. Valdés is widely considered to be one of mambo's signature arrangers. His own rhythm, batanga, featured the sacred Afro-Cuban batá drums for the first time in a big band setting, and was considered to be years ahead of its time.

Mr. Valdés left Cuba in 1960 and worked briefly in Mexico and Spain as music director for a variety of singers (Lucho Gatica) and labels (Hispavox), before touring Europe with The Havana Cuban Boys. ...

Buena Vista Social Club

Buena Vista Social Club

Artist: Ry Cooder , Ibrahim Ferrar , Ruben Gonzalez , Compay Segundo , Omara Portuondo
Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright

Across The Crystal Sea - Conducted and Arranged by Claus Ogerman

Across The Crystal Sea - Conducted and Arranged by Claus Ogerman

Artist: Danilo Perez
Across the Crystal Sea is the latest chapter in Pérez's extraordinary career as a pianist and bandleader who delivers a distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz that covers the music of the Americas, folkloric and world music. He's not only impressed critics (for example, The New York Times' Ben Ratliff writing that he is "a bold example of the musicological rethinking of jazz"), but also fellow musicians. Wayne Shorter says that Pérez "has all of the attributes of a performer, conductor, impresario and purveyor of musical expression greatly needed in these uncertain times" while Herbie Hancock says that Pérez is "not afraid of anything."
