Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a zapateado played by Nino Ricardo) to track 11: Manolo de Huelva accompanying the voice of Manuel Vallejo. Suddenly we are in a cuadro, the natural environment of flamenco, with a group of participants clapping, stamping their feet, and shouting encouragement to the musicians. No longer is it just a man sitting alone on a stage or in a studio, playing the guitar fluently and flawlessly; this is cante hondo, the heart of flamenco, intense and astringent, and the best of this disc's many flavors. --Joe McLellan

In the early 70 s a new sound grew out of the booming cities of the Peruvian Amazon. Chicha, as it came to be known, modeled itself on Colombian Cumbia music but replaced the accordion with surf guitars, and incorporated the psychedelic sounds of Farfisa organs and Moog synthesizers as well as Cuban Guajira,and the distinctive pentatonic scales of Andean melodies. Unlike other modern hybrids, such as Ska or Brazillian Tropicalia, the music never crossed international borders. This is the first ever Chicha compilation to be released outside of Peru.

Marc Anthony comes on like a suave, less jumpy alternative to Ricky Martin on this mostly English-language album. Having already introduced itself to the pop mainstream with the salsa-tinged single "I Need to Know," Marc Anthony offers several other obvious crossover hits, ranging from the Rodney Jerkins-produced Latin-funk fusion of "She's Been Good to Me" to the lovelorn midtempo ballad "When I Dream at Night." However, Anthony's agreeably keening voice is too often applied to the sort of colorless adult-contemporary material typical of Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey mainstay Walter Afansieff, who produces or coproduces three tracks here. The result is often more interesting in sociological terms--Anthony fans who, like the star, were born to Latino parents in America are as sure to eat this disc up as his new Caucasian admirers--than in musical ones. Sigo Siendo Yo (Still Being Me) is not only the title of Marc Anthony's new hits collection, it's also a reaffirmation of his status as one of Spanish-language music's preeminent voices. The stirring set is balanced with sweeping ballads ("Ahora Quien," "Se Esfuma Tu Amor") and Anthony's true forte--scorching salsa numbers ("Valio La Pena," Tu Amor Me Hace Bien"). Still, everything is vividly enhanced by Anthony's astonshing vocal range. The disc's two new songs are a toss up: "Lo Que No Di" is overblown, overwrought and ponderous. In other words, a likely theme song for some future telenovela. First single "Que Precio Tiene El Cielo" is much better, highlighted by a sweet, slowly building salsa rhythm. Some hits--"Dimelo," "Muy Dentro De Mi"--are equally familiar in their English-language versions but benefit from richer performances en espanol--usually the case with Anthony's material. Also included--perhaps as a sweet bit of foresight--is "No Me Ames," Anthony's 1999 duet with future wife Jennifer Lopez. --Joey Guerra
