Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission." Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti Western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald

For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. --Jim Emerson

Jim Carrey stars in the Ron Howard adaptation of Dr. Seuss's enduring tale of the evil Grinch in Whoville and the Christmas he looks to sabotage. Carrey also lends his quick mouth to "Grinch 2000," a rap duet with Busta Rhymes, and to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," which he goes alone in a voice somewhere between Buster Poindexter, Don Rickles, and Pavarotti on acid and amphetamines. The mistletoe has its place above country-pop star Faith Hill, who delivers the album's first single, "Where Are You, Christmas?" Other high-profile names here include those Canadian jokesters BareNaked Ladies, ska-punks Smash Mouth, and that omnipresent boyband 'N Sync. Lesser names like the Eels, the modest pop experiment of a man called "E", and the orchestral grandeur of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra contribute solid festive tunes. Avenue Q will only fuel the frustration of those who think that Broadway has given up on sophisticated entertainment geared to adults. "Whatever happened to Cole Porter's witty rhymes and mature subject matter?" they'll say. Well, it's hard to deny that Avenue Q's main frame of reference is Sesame Street and that its humor can be very broad--yes, there's profanity and puppet sex. But the show also displays heart ("The More You Ruv Someone" typically begins with "Why can't people get along?") and a pretty satisfying zany streak. Musically, the score is rooted in 1970s pop, with nods to the aforementioned Sesame Street. The excellent cast, dominated by John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo, does it justice, milking the humorous numbers for all they're worth and finding pathos in the more straightforward ones. In the tradition of Simon & Garfunkel's The Graduate and Cat Stevens' music for Harold and Maude, Sondre Lerche's Dan in Real Life finds the Norwegian sensation lending his coy, almost precious, touch to this movie's soundtrack. Several tracks are plucked from Lerche's back catalogue, including "Modern Nature" (2002's Faces Down), the Elvis Costello-penned "Human Hands" (2006's Duper Sessions), and "Airport Taxi Reception" (2007's Phantom Punch). These and the seven instrumental cue tracks form the matrix surrounding the four originals, among them a smarmy, beautiful duet with Regina Spektor, whose dulcet voice plays ideal foil to Lerche's own. "I'll Be OK" mimics the aw-shucks charisma of every character lead actor Steve Carell plays, offering inspired proof of director Peter Hedges' wisdom in handing the project to Lerche. Elsewhere, a string-heavy cover of Pete Townshend's seminal "Let My Love Open the Door" provides a memorable highlight. Hedges postulates in the liner notes that perhaps the film was made "so more of the world can hear [Lerche's] music," and certainly, this album provides an enticing vehicle for newcomers to his waverin...

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics.
