Back for the First Time

Artist: Ludacris
If you're looking for that typical "bounce baby bounce" Southern flair, then Ludacris's debut is not for you. Instead of working from the usual template, Def Jam South's first man out enlists the likes of hit-makers Jermaine Dupri, Organized Noize, Timbaland and the Neptunes (along with himself) to give the listener an album with a variety of contrasting styles and musical feels. There are the hard-hitting keys and snares on "U Got a Problem," a streetwise freestyle track with more than enough boom for the beat junkies and plenty of lyrics for hip-hop purists. Then a cut or two later, there's the radio-favored "What's Your Fantasy," with its eerie keyboards and pattering drums. UGK, Foxy Brown, and Pastor Troy all stop by to lend a lyrical hand, but Ludacris is the star on this record. He's got a lyrical style and charisma that transcends coastal allegiances. No gimmicks. Funny skits. Moving music. --Kenji Jasper

Ludacris--2, Bill O'Reilly--1. The dis is mightier than the sword, and Ludacris wastes no time berating Fox News pundit Bill O'Reilly (O’Reilly enticed Pepsi to cut Ludacris off their payroll citing his lyrical irresponsibility). On "Blow It Out," he taunts his conservative right-winged adversary with lines like, "…I’ma start my own beverage/it will calm your nerves/Pepsi, The New Generation/Blow it out ya ass." Likewise, on "Hoes In My Room," a slick souled-out collabo with Snoop, he wonders aloud who could have possibly let all of these revolting groupies into his room, post-concert. O’Reilly, who else? To Ludacris’ credit, his third album is more sonically fluid and versatile than Word of Mouf. From the hypnotic first single "Stand Up" to the classy "Diamond in the Back" (yeah, we’ll forgive him this time for utilizing that vastly overused William Devaughn sample) large chunks of the album are highly listenable…subject matter notwithstanding. By the second half of the album he goes full-on debauchery, flipping bushels of potty-mouthed rhymes in poor taste; "Teamwork" is his audio rendition of what a ménage a trois might feel and sound like, while on ...

The Red Light District

The Red Light District

Artist: Ludacris
Think what you want about Ludacris, but no one can deny that he is hip-hop's king of choruses. Luda's hooks are big, brassy, and loud; they're tailor-made for club crowds and radio programmers. Some songs, like "Get Back," practically sound like one long hook, every line a potential anthem. At times, it's easy to forget that Ludacris knows how to rhyme too. His taffy-pull verbal style isn't as lyrically intricate as Nas's (who appears on "Virgo") and can't match Trick Daddy's thuggish bravado ("Hopeless"), but few other rappers exude his level of charisma. On "Number One Spot," Luda acts like he's strong-arming his way to the top, but it's really charm that propels the charge. Even on a song like "Two Miles an Hour," dedicated to "those who spend more on their car than their relationship," he's more clever than clownish in selling the concept. Red Light District has its share of filler, but, track for track, Ludacris still delivers satisfaction. --Oliver Wang
