The offspring of jazz-trumpet great Don Cherry and half-brother of both Neneh Cherry and Swedish pop diva Titiyo (who duets with her brother on "Worried Eyes"), Eagle-Eye proves that we are not who we're related to. He was born in Stockholm to Cherry and Swedish mixed-media artist Moki, and one might suppose a member of this clan to be as innovative as the rest of his brood, especially given such an idiosyncratic moniker. But it turns out that that's the only eccentric thing about this musician. Cherry offers up a low-key, melodic diary of tales of his misspent youth in New York. And despite the music's soft-focus part-Cat Stevens, part-Ben Harper leanings, occasionally you realize that Eagle-Eye must have pasted posters of Ozzy Osbourne and Jimi Hendrix on his bedroom wall. "Indecision" (supposedly a rejoinder to Stockholm neo-Nazi "White Noise" bands like Swastika) rides on a searing Richie Blackmore lick. "Save Tonight" is a bittersweet reworking of Peter, Paul and Mary's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" theme. The title song updates his late father's "Desireless," which is revitalized via sparse piano, a haunting trumpet, and Cherry's hypnotic, repetitive vocals. Here it's clear that, ...

Douglas Spotted Eagle is a man of many talents: flautist, film score composer, producer, author, activist, and performer with the Voices of Native America Tour. As a young man, he abandoned his rock & roll dreams for family, returning to music by his mid-20's in the wake of his late marriage. Spotted Eagle picked up the flute of his boyhood, and shortly thereafter distinguished himself as the first recording artist to combine Native American flute with synthesizer. And here, on his 14th solo recording, during the making of which his teenage son died, Spotted Eagle has again channeled his considerable loss into a work unlike any other. More fiery than earlier recordings, Voices is a blend of ethnic contemporary: jazzy horns and guitars, a dense undercurrent of meaty drum & bass beats, R&B-style crooning, and traditional Diné vocals by friends and tribal elders. Eagle-Eye Cherry has lost some of his cool on his sophomore record, most likely due to a breakup with his longtime live-in girlfriend. While most of the songs on Present Future retain the seamless, sophisticated pop sound of Desireless, the words tell quite a different story. Absent are the engaging tales of misspent youth in New York, as well as the radiant paeans to love. "Crashing Down," "Been Here Once Before," and the vengeful, jam-band-inspired "Burning Up" churn up darker emotions centering on overindulgence and betrayal. While this album may mark an end of innocence for Cherry, it is also a creative breakthrough that shows his grittier, more human face. "You know when you've been defeated / You don't care and you thank no one," he sneers on the hard thumping "Are You Still Having Fun?," banishing the pop teddy bear of the first record. He also enlists another sibling (pop diva and sister Titiyo, who guested last time out), as well as '80s sensation Neneh Cherry, who puts her sassy stamp on "Long Way Around" and stays around long enough to steal the show. --Jaan Uhelszki
