We Are Marshall

We Are Marshall

Artist: Christophe Beck
Even if you didn't know the plot of We Are Marshall, you could deduce from this CD that it's an inspirational movie set in the heartland and that it's about college sports. You'd be right. "Marshall vs. East Caroline" is a dead giveaway. The track starts off with a gentle piano theme, quickly augmented with a softly plucked guitar and strings; just after the minute mark, a fierce drum line comes in and shakes things up, though a slightly ominous undercurrent indicates that tears will have to be shed and boys will have to become men before victory can be declared. Fans of composer Christophe Beck from his days on Buffy the Vampire Slayer must be warned that his style on this soundtrack is a far cry from the one he adopted on the TV series--most of the cues here are fairly unassuming, except when Beck brings back the drum line ("Marshall vs. Xavier," "The Young Thundering Herd"). Note also that while the movie is set in the 1970s, this CD is devoted to the score and devoid of the expected classic-rock tunes. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Tibetan Freedom Concert; New York City, June 1997

Artist: Chaksam-pa , Alanis Morissette , Bjork , Rancid , Beastie Boys , Cibo Matto , Beck , De La Soul , The Fugees , Rage Against the Machine
This package is stuffed with top-line artists, and whoever chose the tracks knew what they were doing. With this kind of sprawl to deal with, track selection is like haiku: difficult, but evocative when done artfully. Radiohead does "Fake Plastic Trees," Rancid does Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come," Patti Smith gets "About a Boy," and the Beasties weigh in with "Root Down." And on and on the list goes, from Sonic Youth to Taj Mahal. Maybe you don't think you want a no-commitment introduction to Tibetan music. Actually, you do--and there's some here. A huge record of a huge show. Comes recommended. --Gavin McNett

The Perfect Man

The Perfect Man

This soundtrack contains songs from Curb recording artists Kaci, Kimberley Locke and Plumb, along with cuts from Howie Day, Jadon Lavik, Sarah Overall, Beth Thornley, Grits and Styx frontman Dennis DeYoung.

Diane Warren, considered one of the most prolific and successful contemporary songwriters, wrote "I Will Learn to Love Again" for the film and has high expectations for the single. "'I Will Learn to Love Again' is the perfect song for Curb's artist, Kaci. The Perfect Man is a fun, feel good movie and this song is a natural radio hit. I wrote the songs for Coyote Ugly on Curb Records and 'Can't Fight the Moonlight' was a huge hit for me, Kathy Nelson and Mike Curb. It's a winning combination. Kaci is about to make the same history with this song," said Warren.
