The success of the jaunty "S.O.S" and bouncy Abba-by-numbers (no insult!) "Mamma Mia" ended a year of uncertainty. For a while, it seemed as if the Swedish quartet wouldn't be able to break free of the stigma of being a pop band that didn't boast English as a first language. "S.O.S" changed all that. Elsewhere, however, the quartet still hadn't quite found their niche: slipping from the great (the truly scary "Hey, Hey Helen," the poptastic "Bang-A-Boomerang," and the unstoppably catchy marriage song "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do") to the ridiculous (the funkified "Man in the Middle" and the sunburned "Tropical Loveland") with alarming ease. The token glam stomper, "Rock Me," this time round, though, was awesome. --Everett True

Abba are following in the footsteps of The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson with the Number Ones concept, and we're assuming that the designation applies to charts from around the world. There are 18 songs on the album, but no Abba song ever hit #1 in Canada, 'Dancing Queen' was the only one to do it in the U.S., and seven singles did it in the U.K. So the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest winners must have made a major impact in a number of non-English-speaking territories. At the height of their success, ABBA were second only to Volvo as Sweden's biggest export earners. Arrival (1977) sees the quartet just finding their stride, after a year of relative obscurity which followed the success of "Waterloo," their 1973 Eurovision Song Contest winner. Like their '70s peers ELO, ABBA knew the value of tunes, tunes, tunes. Arrival's hits include the glistening, full-on sheen of "Knowing Me, Knowing You," the irrepressible, piano-led disco stomp of "Dancing Queen," and the almost Cabaret-esque sarcasm of "Money, Money, Money"--all three cowritten by manager and mentor Stig Anderson. The album ends, meanwhile, on an almost Celtic theme with the soaring, wordless title track. Arrival is superconfident and superpolished, and was an unstoppably chartbound record of its moment. --Everett True
