Mark (Sam Neill) comes home from months on the road to find his flighty wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani in an almost bug-eyed performance), ready to divorce him. Distraught and angry, he tracks down her lover, but discovers a secret unknown to either of the men. Anna has given birth, literally, to a demon lover (created by monster maker Carlos Rimbaldi), and she'll murder anyone who dares to come between them. Full of anger, jealousy, emotional suffering, and vindictiveness, this bizarre, bleak horror film is a mix of Hollywood melodrama, European psychodrama, and the raw, blunt emotions of personal art cinema. Mark and Anna grow increasingly shrill and erratic as they sink deeper into madness and obsession, and finally doppelgängers, also played by Neill and Adjani, arise to take their place. Hints of Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, and the biological horrors of David Cronenberg float through the story. The English-language French production was shot in Germany with a Polish director and an international cast, which only adds to the dissonance. Andrzej Zulawski (who claims that the film was inspired by his own divorce) directs this obscure and often alienating film with unre...

In the beginning, her husband knows nothing about the monster and sincerely believes that his wife is insane. He has her tailed by private detectives, whom she kills and feeds to the creature. Still unaware of what has happened, the husband contends with the reserved and inadvertently seductive presence of his wife's look-alike (also played by Adjani), a schoolteacher who frequently comes to tutor his son while his wife is away. Though tempted by her quiet goodness and beauty, he is still passionately in love with his wife and even after he finds out about the murders, he stays by her sid...

Veronika Voss [VHS]

Veronika Voss [VHS]

Rated: R (Restricted)
Staring: Peter Berling , Annemarie Düringer , Cornelia Froboess , Johanna Hofer , Günther Kaufmann
Part fairy tale, part melodrama, part horror film, German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's hypnotic Veronika Voss tells the story of a former movie star with questionable ties to the Nazi regime, whose addiction to morphine has drawn her into the hands of a controlling psychiatrist. An encounter with a sportswriter on a rainy night leads to a brief affair, after which he becomes obsessed with the unstable Voss. He tries to investigate her plight, but his efforts lead to disaster. Veronika Voss aspires to outdo Sunset Boulevard as a portrait of the corrosive powers of fame and illusions--and it almost succeeds. Beautifully photographed in sumptuous black and white and edited like a symphony, Veronika Voss unfolds like a roll of silk laced with poison. Featuring Rosel Zech, Hilmar Thate, Conny Froboess, and Armin Mueller-Stahl. --Bret Fetzer
